2014 has been a watershed moment for video games, as the industry transitions from the large studio model resembling the film industry of the 1930s, into a more stealth and variegated industry with diverse studios and creators developing across a wide variety of platforms for an increasing heterogeneous audience within a more agile and flexible funding and publishing infrastructure. This presentation will discuss some recent research findings related to indie developers, as well as presenting some highly innovative works from IndieCade and Celia’s recent exhibition XYZ: Alternative Voices in Game Design, focusing on the contribution of women to games. She will also talk about the importance of diversity and how to expand participation in game-related initiatives.
